Parade Magazine’s Interview with Debbie Gibson
Before there was Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, there was Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Now, more than 20 years later, the former teen queens are reuniting for theirJourney Through the ‘80snational tour.
Gibson, 40, spoke to PARADE about reliving the decade that had her rocking arenas (and malls) in shoulder pads and bowler hats.
She also opened up about the unique pressure today’s pop stars are under and why she’s glad YouTube and camera phones didn’t exist when she was topping the charts.
On how the Journey Through the 80’s tour came about.
“The idea has always been floating around and when Tiffany and I did this crazy TV sci-fi film together [2011’s Mega Python vs. Gatoroid] people got really excited to see us in the same room at the same time. Then we did a little promo appearance at the Canal Room in New York City and people just went nuts seeing us together, so we were like, ‘Hmmm.’”
What fans can expect from Debbie and Tiffany.
“I’m doing all my hits and also a big medley of my favorite 80s songs that influenced me. I’m also doing a medley of my theater songs. When Tiffany and I were putting the show together, we were talking about how our influences are so different. Hers are rock and country; mine are singer-songwriters and real pop people and theater. It was actually her idea for me to do some of my Broadway stuff. We’re also opening and closing the show with two duets.”
